# How Market Makers Earn on Hyperliquid

A Hyperliquid market maker does not earn simply because it posts limit orders. Profit comes when the spread and any maker economics exceed the cost of trading against informed flow, carrying inventory, hedging, cancellations, and infrastructure. The strategy is a continuous pricing business with a balance sheet.

## Spread capture

A maker that buys near bid and later sells near ask captures gross spread. The realized spread should be measured against a later fair-value mark, not merely the difference between two fill prices.

If price immediately falls after every buy, the apparent spread can be overwhelmed by adverse selection.

## Maker rebates and fee tiers

Hyperliquid's fee schedule can improve the economics of passive execution, and aligned quote assets can have additional fee/rebate treatment where applicable. These are protocol parameters and should be loaded current.

A rebate is not alpha. It is one line in the PnL statement.

## Inventory

Market makers accumulate positions as customer flow becomes one-sided. Quoting models skew prices and sizes to encourage offsetting fills or hedge elsewhere.

Inventory risk is often the largest source of tail loss because a maker can be forced to trade precisely when liquidity is deteriorating.

## Adverse selection

Counterparties are more likely to hit a stale quote when they know or react to information faster. Measure post-fill mark-outs. A strategy with high fill rate but consistently negative mark-outs is providing cheap options to faster traders.

## Operating edge

Low-latency market data, reliable order-state reconciliation, rate-limit management, fee optimization, and risk automation improve the fraction of theoretical edge that survives in production.

The best theoretical quote model can lose money if the implementation keeps stale orders live after data disconnects.
