# Why USDH Sunset

USDH's sunset was not a conventional insolvency event. Public transition announcements described USDH as fully backed and redeemable while Native Markets wound down the product and Hyperliquid's aligned stablecoin strategy moved toward USDC. The shift favored an asset that already had roughly $5 billion on Hyperliquid at Coinbase's May 2026 announcement and came with mature issuer, redemption, crosschain, and distribution infrastructure.

## Network effects

Stablecoin markets reward concentration. Market makers prefer deep quote liquidity, users prefer assets accepted across venues, and institutions prefer established redemption and custody support. USDC already had those advantages on Hyperliquid.

## Infrastructure

Circle could provide native mint, redemption, and CCTP infrastructure. Coinbase added distribution and treasury-deployer responsibilities. Replicating that external network for a younger USDH would require substantial scale.

## Protocol economics survived the transition

The core idea behind USDH, sharing stablecoin economics with Hyperliquid, did not disappear. It moved into the aligned USDC structure through AQAv2.

## User transition

Native Markets kept redemptions available during the wind-down. USDH.com later sunset and directed remaining holders to Bridge for continuing 1:1 USDC or fiat redemption over the stated transition period.

## Lesson

A protocol-native brand does not automatically beat a globally distributed stablecoin. Stablecoin value comes from redemption, liquidity, regulation, integrations, and distribution as much as from onchain token design.
