# Stablecoin Depeg Risk on Hyperliquid

A quote asset is part of the unit of account for a market, so a depeg is not an ordinary token move. If a “$1” collateral asset trades at $0.95, traders can see apparent profits or losses that need to be interpreted in real dollars, collateral can lose effective value, conversion books can become one-sided, and lenders may rush to withdraw. The risk propagates through every product that assumes the stable asset is stable.

## Issuer versus market depeg

A token can trade below one dollar because redemption itself is impaired or simply because secondary-market liquidity is temporarily stressed. The correct response depends on whether users can still redeem at par and how quickly.

## Quote-market distortion

If an asset is quoted in a depegging stablecoin, its numeric price can rise even when its dollar value is unchanged. Risk systems should monitor both quote-token/USD and asset/quote relationships.

## Margin

Collateral systems may apply oracle or reference prices that adjust the stablecoin's value rather than assume one dollar forever. Traders should know how their account mode values each collateral asset during a depeg.

## Liquidity spiral

Market makers can withdraw, conversion spreads widen, borrowing rates jump, and users crowd into the perceived safer stablecoin. Fragmentation becomes acute precisely when everyone wants to convert.

## Institutional control

Set issuer concentration limits, monitor redemption and reserve status, maintain alternative settlement routes, and stress a 1%, 5%, and larger depeg across all positions. Do not treat a stablecoin balance as cash without specifying the issuer and redemption path.
