How Oracle Prices Feed Hyperliquid's Risk Engine

Oracle prices anchor Hyperliquid's derivatives to external reference markets and feed mark, funding, margin, and liquidation logic without serving as the only executable trading price.

An oracle price is a reference input, not an order-book quote. Hyperliquid validators publish oracle information derived from external market sources, and the protocol uses those references inside robust mark and risk calculations. Orders still execute against HyperCore's book. The oracle's job is to stop the local derivative market from becoming its own isolated definition of fair value.

External reference construction

For standard crypto markets, Hyperliquid documentation describes validator-published oracle prices based on a weighted-median process across major spot exchanges. Validators update frequently, and the protocol aggregates their submissions.

The specific source exchanges and weights are protocol data that should be checked live rather than embedded as timeless Academy facts.

Risk-engine path

Oracle enters the marking framework. Mark then affects unrealized PnL and liquidation health. Funding also uses the relationship between derivative pricing and reference pricing to move incentives between longs and shorts.

The oracle therefore influences accounts even though users do not “trade at the oracle.”

Oracle disagreement

During exchange outages, depegs, token migrations, or fragmented spot markets, source venues can disagree. A robust aggregation method tries to ignore or reduce the effect of outliers, but an underlying market can still become genuinely difficult to price.

Market operations and validator behavior are part of derivatives risk.

HIP-3 changes who operates the reference

Builder-deployed markets introduce deployer responsibilities around oracle updates and market-specific reference design. A trader should distinguish a core market's mature multi-venue reference from a specialized market whose underlying may have less established price discovery.

Builder rule

Never treat an oracle value as an executable exit price. Before liquidating, hedging, or calculating slippage, inspect actual book liquidity. Reference price and executable price answer different questions.
