HYPE as Collateral in Hyperliquid Portfolio Margin

Advanced | 3 min | Last verified 2026-09-07

HYPE can support Portfolio Margin exposure subject to an asset-specific collateral factor, so its collateral value is deliberately lower than its spot market value.

Using HYPE as Portfolio Margin collateral does not mean every dollar of HYPE creates one dollar of borrowing power. The risk engine applies an asset-specific collateral factor or loan-to-value treatment so volatile collateral contributes less than a stable asset. This buffer protects the account and protocol against the fact that HYPE can fall while the position it supports is also losing money.

Why volatile collateral is discounted

Stablecoin collateral and volatile-token collateral do not behave the same way during liquidation. A volatile asset can drop rapidly, gap through order-book levels, and become correlated with the trader's other exposures.

A haircut means the protocol values only a portion of the current market value for margin purposes. The unused portion is the safety buffer.

Correlation is the hidden issue

Imagine using HYPE to support a leveraged long position in another crypto asset during a broad market selloff. The position can lose value at the same time HYPE collateral falls. The account therefore experiences a double hit.

A collateral factor cannot eliminate that correlation. It merely reduces the starting leverage available against the collateral.

Collateral factor is a live parameter

Portfolio Margin documentation has changed during rollout, including asset eligibility, caps, and collateral treatment. Treat the current parameter as volatile protocol state and verify it before calculating borrowing capacity.

Do not copy a collateral ratio from an old support article, dashboard screenshot, or Academy page into a production risk engine.

Institutional treatment

An institution should separate mark-to-market asset exposure from usable margin value. If a treasury holds $10 million of HYPE, the gross treasury value and the amount recognized by Portfolio Margin are different numbers.

Risk systems should also haircut further internally if the firm's loss tolerance is tighter than the protocol's liquidation threshold.
