HIP-3 Collateral and Capital Fragmentation

Advanced | 3 min | Last verified 2026-09-07

HIP-3 lets builders create independent perpetual market groups, but independent collateral choices and margin domains can fragment capital that would otherwise net across one shared risk pool.

HIP-3 expands market creation without forcing every perpetual into one centrally operated set. The trade-off is that builder-deployed markets can have independent collateral and margin settings. When exposures live in separate margin domains, capital that economically hedges across markets may not receive full cross-margin recognition, creating fragmentation.

Why independent margin domains exist

A HIP-3 deployer controls important market parameters and operates its own market set while inheriting HyperCore's order-book and margin infrastructure. Isolating risk prevents one experimental market group from automatically sharing every loss path with core or unrelated markets.

That separation is a safety boundary.

How fragmentation appears to a trader

A trader may hold profitable collateral or an offsetting position elsewhere on Hyperliquid but still need dedicated collateral for the HIP-3 market. Economically, the portfolio may look hedged. Operationally, the margin engine may evaluate the two positions separately.

The result is higher gross collateral usage than a fully unified prime-brokerage model.

Quote assets make the problem multidimensional

HIP-3 markets can use supported quote assets according to protocol rules. Different quote assets create additional balance management and stablecoin risk.

A trader comparing two equivalent markets should therefore compare not only spread and fees but also collateral mobility, margin treatment, and quote-asset liquidity.

Why fragmentation can still be rational

Shared margin creates capital efficiency but also transmits losses. Independent collateral contains risk and lets deployers innovate without requiring every market to fit one global risk model.

The design problem is to find the appropriate boundary. Too much isolation wastes capital; too much sharing can turn local market failure into system-wide contagion.

What to monitor

Check the market's collateral asset, margin mode, oracle method, deployer operation, open-interest caps, and whether cross-margin eligibility has been granted or changed. HIP-3 is a fast-moving surface, so these properties need live verification.
