Why USDC Became Hyperliquid's Aligned Quote Asset

Why USDC became Hyperliquid's AQAv2 stablecoin, with Coinbase as treasury deployer and Circle as technical deployer.

USDC already had substantial distribution on Hyperliquid before AQAv2. Coinbase said in May 2026 that roughly $5 billion of USDC was on Hyperliquid and that the balance had approximately doubled year over year. The AQAv2 arrangement formalized that role by separating treasury and technical responsibilities between Coinbase and Circle.

Existing liquidity reduced fragmentation

A quote asset becomes more useful when traders, market makers, exchanges, and fiat onramps already support it. Concentrating more activity around an established dollar asset reduces conversions between stablecoins and can reduce liquidity fragmentation.

This was also part of the USDH transition. Native Markets agreed to terms granting Coinbase the right to purchase USDH brand assets, while USDH markets and balances began moving toward USDC.

Circle provides the technical layer

Circle is the technical deployer. It is responsible for reliable USDC minting, redemption, and crosschain transfer infrastructure. Native USDC and CCTP are available on HyperEVM, giving the ecosystem issuer-controlled settlement and crosschain rails.

Coinbase provides the treasury layer

Coinbase is the treasury deployer. AQAv2 separates the treasury address and reserve-economics responsibilities from the technical deployment role. Both Coinbase and Circle must satisfy the 500,000 HYPE staking requirement attached to their respective AQAv2 roles.

The main economic benefit is reserve sharing

AQAv2 routes approximately 90% of cost-adjusted reserve yield on Hyperliquid USDC supply to the protocol. Unlike AQAv1, AQAv2 explicitly has no trading-fee or fee-tier volume contribution benefit.

That distinction matters because USDC's current alignment should not be modeled as a blanket trading-fee discount. Its core alignment is reserve economics, operational infrastructure, and future eligibility for markets that require AQAv2 quote assets.
