Aligned vs Permissionless Quote Assets on Hyperliquid
How permissionless quote assets differ from AQAv2 aligned stablecoins in staking, reserve economics, roles, and market eligibility.
Permissionless quote assets and AQAv2 aligned stablecoins solve different problems. Permissionless quote status lets eligible stable assets become spot quote tokens under open protocol rules. AQAv2 adds a deeper operational and economic relationship between a stablecoin deployment and Hyperliquid.
Permissionless quote assets
The current quote-token rules require eight wei decimals, two size decimals, zero deployer fee share on the quote token, and normally 200,000 HYPE of deployer stake. The stake is tied to documented peg and liquidity conditions. USDC and USDT are exempt from that staking requirement because of their scale and track record.
The focus is whether the asset can function reliably as trading money.
AQAv2 aligned stablecoins
AQAv2 introduces two separate roles: a treasury deployer and a technical deployer. Each must stake 500,000 HYPE. The treasury side handles the onchain reserve-yield relationship, while the technical side is responsible for minting, redemption, and crosschain infrastructure.
AQAv2 routes approximately 90% of cost-adjusted reserve yield on Hyperliquid supply to the protocol and requires validator activation.
The specification also says AQAv2 will be required for quote assets used by HIP-4 and validator-operated perpetual markets on a future network upgrade.
AQAv2 does not carry AQAv1's trading incentives
AQAv1 offered 20% lower taker fees, 50% larger maker rebates, and 20% more fee-tier volume contribution. AQAv2 explicitly has no trading-fee or volume-contribution benefit.
That distinction is important when comparing a current USDC market with older descriptions of aligned quote assets.
What traders should compare
The label alone is not enough. Compare actual order-book depth, issuer and redemption risk, crosschain portability, collateral treatment, and which market types support the quote asset.
