USDC vs USDT vs Other Quote Assets on Hyperliquid
Compare USDC, USDT, and other Hyperliquid quote assets by liquidity, redemption, protocol status, portability, and market eligibility.
USDC, USDT, and newer stablecoins can all act as dollar-like assets, but their roles on Hyperliquid are not identical. USDC is the live AQAv2 example, with Coinbase as treasury deployer and Circle as technical deployer. USDT is an established permissionless quote asset and is exempt from the normal 200,000 HYPE quote-token stake requirement.
Issuer and redemption risk
Start with the asset itself. Compare the issuer, reserve structure, direct redemption rules, regulatory entities, freeze policy, and historical peg behavior. A quote asset can have deep liquidity and still carry issuer-specific risk.
Hyperliquid liquidity
Global stablecoin size does not guarantee deep liquidity in every Hyperliquid pair. Inspect the relevant spot books, HYPE/QUOTE liquidity, collateral demand, and the markets that actually use the asset.
Protocol status
USDC's AQAv2 status changes its protocol relationship through reserve-yield sharing and deployer obligations. AQAv2 also matters for future HIP-4 and validator-operated perp quote-asset eligibility.
AQAv2 should not be treated as a blanket trading-fee discount. The v2 specification explicitly says there is no trading-fee or fee-tier volume contribution benefit. Those incentives belong to AQAv1.
Crosschain portability
Native issuance and issuer-controlled crosschain systems can reduce dependence on wrapped stablecoins. Circle's native USDC and CCTP support on HyperEVM are relevant for users moving capital across supported chains.
Diversification has a cost
Holding multiple stablecoins can reduce concentration in one issuer, but it increases operational complexity and can fragment liquidity. Traders should evaluate issuer risk and market structure together rather than assuming every token near one dollar is interchangeable.
For how fragmentation affects markets, read Stablecoin Fragmentation and Liquidity.
