Quote-Asset Risk for HIP-3 Deployers
A HIP-3 deployer choosing collateral or quote assets takes on stablecoin liquidity, issuer, oracle, redemption, fragmentation, and market-maker inventory risk in addition to the underlying perp market risk.
HIP-3 makes quote-asset choice a market-design decision. The collateral token determines what traders must hold, what market makers inventory, how PnL is denominated, and which stablecoin failure can propagate into the DEX. An aligned asset can improve fee and liquidity economics, while a permissionless asset can differentiate the market or capture other network effects. Neither choice is risk-free.
Trader acquisition
Requiring an unfamiliar stablecoin creates conversion friction. A trader with USDC may need to cross a spread before opening the position and again when exiting.
Market-maker balance sheet
Makers need quote inventory and reliable hedging/redemption. If the quote asset has shallow external liquidity, every profitable trading strategy also carries stablecoin basis risk.
Oracle and valuation
Collateral value needs a robust dollar reference. A depeg can reduce margin quality at the same time traders rush to exit, making liquidation harder.
Aligned economics
Aligned quote assets currently receive lower taker fees, improved maker rebates, and enhanced volume credit, potentially helping a HIP-3 DEX bootstrap liquidity. The deployer should calculate whether those benefits outweigh any strategic reason to use a different token.
Operational policy
Define depeg thresholds, alternative collateral plans, market-halting procedures, conversion liquidity requirements, and communication before launch. Quote-asset risk should be part of the market's published specification.
